Reviewing the child’s file helps the clinician understand your child’s cognitive and educational strengths and weaknesses. This information will help the clinician develop an educational plan which strengthens the weak skills identified when reading the file. In addition, if the previous testing is not comprehensive or current, reviewing the file can help provide the basis for administering new and updated testing to obtain current levels of academic functioning. Reviewing the file can help guide the parent towards other specialized services such as an audiologist, speech and language pathologist, occupational therapist, or psychologist in the community. In addition, the review of the file can determine if a classroom observation, screening, or full assessment are required to develop the educational plan.
